"Word problems just don't happen in everyday life." - my brother
In the final chapter of my book, my brother made the above statement. Although he is an apt mathematician, how he learned about word problems at school was disconnected to their application to the real world. It has been my mission ever since to screenshot word problems happening in everyday life. This is why we must embrace the pedagogy to teaching reasoning instead of word problem strategies. Can any classroom strategy for solving word problems successfully apply to every real world word problem? (Hint: The answer is no, but the pedagogy to teaching reasoning does successfully apply to every word problem.)
